The Color Wheel Is a great way to begin teaching the basics of painting.

Primary colors: Red, Yellow, Blue             Secondary colors: Orange, Green, Purple

Complimentary colors: Blue and Orange, Red and Green, Purple and Yellow

Explore mixing paint

1) Try mixing varying hues of green, orange, purple and brown

2) Try a dramatic painting using two complimentary colors

3) Use tints of color (add black or white to change the tint)

4) Start with a pure color and add increasing amounts of white

5) Draw a picture with oil pastels using vibrant colors, paint over the drawing with thin black paint

6) Dab paint on with a sponge

7) Dab wet paint off with a paper towel

8) Scratch a fork through the wet paint

9)Explore warm colors (red, orange, yellow) and cool colors (green, blue, purple)

10) Explore Georgia O'Keefe's work and do two close up paintings using warm or cool colors
