Children Drawing

One assignment we were given in our Art class was to observe a child drawing
1) A self portrait
2) How something works
3) Anything they want

I observed an eight year old girl whom was very excited to be a part of this project. She didn't talk a lot while she was drawing except for a few questions she asked ("Do have to draw my head or just my whole body? How do I draw eyes? Can I use an eraser?")

She made very clear marks on the paper, each movement was thoughtful and precise.
It was interesting to see how she recreated the intricate details of the sweater she was wearing at the time. She made connections as she drew, "my mom bought me this shirt."
For her drawing of "how something works," she decided to draw a library. She drew a librarian, student, bookshelves, a student with a book, and a return box. When I questioned her about what things were she clearly explained them and used her knowledge of libraries and her experiences being in a library.

When she was asked to draw anything she wanted, she drew a puppy, mouse, snail and a worm. In her grade three class they had just recently released their worms from their "worm hotels" into the garden at school. This is why she chose to draw a worm. She also mentioned that the worm and snail were under the ground (in the corner of the page). It was interesting that she chose to draw the mouse with a human body, and the legs on the dog showed me that she was beginning to explore drawing 3D.

Desiree is in grade Five.

Sam is in Kindergarten.
